PEDIATRIC UPDATE

WELCOME
This year, the Annual Las Vegas Seminars will be held at the exciting Caesars Palace Las Vegas. The attendance at our conference, now in its thirty-first year, exceeds 600 practitioners, representing pediatricians and allied health professionals from all parts of the United States and from many foreign countries.
We thank our many excellent speakers—a true all-star cast of the most knowledgeable educators in pediatrics and pediatric subspecialties. Most of all, we are grateful to our meeting registrants for their continuing interest and enthusiasm.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The overall learning need identified by our physicians’ education committee was for practical, evidenced-based medicine that can be applied in the clinical setting. Needs in a wide variety of subject areas were identified. This program will address the areas of asthmatology, adolescence, dermatology, developmental and behavioral pediatrics, gynecology, infectious diseases, and orthopaedics.
This is an opportunity to escape the frantic pace of wintertime pediatrics, visit with old friends, make new friends, and return home refreshed with new knowledge and relaxed from three to four beautiful days in exciting Las Vegas.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this activity participants should be able to:
- Identify, assess and manage clinical issues in the areas of asthmatology, adolescence, dermatology, developmental and behavioral pediatrics, gynecology, infectious diseases, and orthopaedics;
- Critique the current guidelines for the management of asthma in children;
- Describe the office management of the child with skeletal trauma;
- Appreciate how to talk with teens about sex;
- Understand normal and abnormal menstruation;
- Recognize and diagnose red and brown birthmarks and assess the need for interventions;
- Clarify the management of acute otitis media.
Target Audience
This seminar is directed toward urban and rural, general and sub-specialty pediatricians, as well as non-pediatric physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other allied health professionals.
Hotel Accommodations
Four hundred rooms at Caesars Palace will be available to registrants at the special rate of $209 for Palace and Forum Tower Rooms, single or double occupancy, subject to tax. Additional persons: $30 a day, with a maximum of three persons per room. This special rate is valid the nights of November 17-23 only and is available until November 4, 2009 or until all 400 blocked rooms are taken. Once these are taken, regular hotel rates will apply. District IX disclaims any responsibility for hotel arrangements. Room cancellations must be received by Caesars Palace at least 72 hours prior to arrival. Room reservations may be made online.
We recommend you make reservations far in advance of the meeting.
Air Transportation
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has negotiated discounted airfares for participants traveling to Las Vegas for the program. To find out what money saving fares are available from your city and to make flight reservations, you or your travel agent may contact the AAP Travel Office at 888/227-1772. Outside the United States and Canada, call 708/228-5005 and ask for the travel office.
Registration and Message Center
The registration desk will be open on Thursday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and during the meeting from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. Upon registration you will receive a syllabus and folder with meeting information.

Cancellation and Refund Policy
Program registration cancellations by November 1, 2009 will be subject to an administrative charge of 10% or up to $50. There will be no refunds for cancellations after November 1, 2009. All cancellations must be in writing.
Accreditation
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatrics, California District. The American Academy of Pediatrics is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The AAP designates this educational activity for a maximum of 16.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits (TM). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
This activity is acceptable for a maximum of 16.00 AAP credits. These credits can be applied toward the AAP CME/CPD Award available to Fellows and Candidate Members of the AAP.
The American Academy of Physician Assistants accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits (TM) from organizations accredited by the ACCME.
This program is approved for 16.00 NAPNAP contact hours of which 4.95 contain pharmacology (Rx) content per the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners Continuing Education Guidelines.
Other Information
There is a continental breakfast and coffee service in the exhibit halls each morning. Coffee service is maintained through the midway break each day.
There are luncheon seminars on Friday and Saturday. The six Friday seminars are repeated on Saturday to allow the registrants to attend as many as two different seminars. There is an extra charge of $75 for each luncheon seminar. Seating is limited. Once maximum seating has been reached, registration for that luncheon seminar will close. Please indicate a second and third choice and register at least three days in advance.
